Heartland Institute leak: media coverage picks up, promise of more to come

The Guardian has picked it up:

The Valentine’s Day exposé of Heartland is reminscent to a certain extent of the hacking of emails from the University of East Anglia’s Climate Research Unit in 2009. Those documents helped sink the UN’s climate summit later that year.

In this instance, however, the Heartland documents are policy statements – not private email correspondence. Desmogblog said they came from an insider at Heartland and were not the result of a hack.

The documents posted on Desmog’s website include confidential memos of Heartland’s climate science denial strategy, its 2012 budget and fundraising plan, and minutes from a recent board meeting.

The fundraising plan suggests Heartland is hoping for a banner year, projecting it will raise $7.7m in 2012, up 70% from last year.

The papers indicate that discrediting established climate science remains a core mission of the organisation, which has received support from a network of wealthy individuals – including the Koch oil billionaires as well as corporations such as Microsoft and RJR Tobacco.

The Huffington Post gets wind:

Internal Heartland Institute strategy and funding documents obtained by DeSmogBlog expose the heart of the climate denial machine — its current plans, many of its funders, and details that confirm what DeSmogBlog and others have reported for years. The heart of the climate denial machine relies on huge corporate and foundation funding from U.S. businesses including Microsoft, Koch Industries, Altria (parent company of Philip Morris), RJR Tobacco and more.

We are releasing the entire trove of documents now to allow crowd-sourcing of the material. Here are a few quick highlights, stay tuned for much more.

Hints of more?

I’ll be looking at the Australian angle. I note there is a mention of another Australian in the documents, I’m researching that individual right now.

Message to the deniers…

There are no secrets. Everything can be, and will be, exposed. The evidence exists. We will source it. We will publish it.

Expect us.

Anyone in posession of those documents are in posession of stolen items. Releasing the information on those documents will encourage litigation. I hope Desmogblog has deep pockets.

    cheers

I can just see heartland being willing to disclose all documents relating to this in a litigation case , in your dreams klem

These documents show clearly that the constant claims of ‘well funded climate denialism’ were never true. Alarmists simply made them up. This denier funding is peanuts.

As a skeptic myself, I never really knew if deniers were well funded or not. Now I know they never were well funded.

Its the greenies who have been well funded all along.

    Thank you Desmogblog. Nice work

More than the IPCC received in 2007 klem , as we have been saying the IPCC operates on a very small budget. thanks for confirmation

lol, yes…… now though, wouldn’t it have been prudent to vet the information before publishing?

Heartland emphatically states the “Confidential Memo: 2012 Heartland Climate Strategy” is a fake…… and it obviously is just by the verbiage. It’s properties have been washed, and the date and timing is wrong.

So, this tells us one of two things. Either people like DeSmog are intentionally misleading people and are dishonest. Or, they were easily duped and lack critical thinking skills. So much so, that nothing they say can be taken seriously. ….. too funny.

    • Watching the Deniers says:

      Heartland: the paragon of honesty?

      Lolz!

      • suyts says:

I didn’t say they were…… I’m saying one of the dispatches were faked. ….. a lie.. and without checking….. alarmists from all over picked up and ran. In other words, they are easily duped. They lack the critical thinking skills to determine the truth from a hoax.

    • The fact that you believe the excuses trotted out by an organisation specifically designed to deceive the public doesn’t say much for your objectivity – but it does highlight your gullibility.

      • suyts says:

        Look at the pdfs ……

Blair if I produced a pdf and it showed some nasty things about you….. what would you say? Likely very near the same thing Heartland stated.

But, really, this doesn’t say anything about me, more than it does to the people who uncritically believe this. Even if it is believable to you, you should vet it first.

BTW, the fake document is entirely unbelievable, from the verbiage used to the outlining of the statements. No one writes like that. ….lol, “Confidential Memo!!!” adding to the mystery…. “the Anonymous Donor!!!” and my favorite, “dissuading teachers from teaching science.”

Honestly, even if they were engaged in such an activity, do you really believe they would word it like that?

      • Too funny suyts, I just love the irony of your double standards. You rush to defend an organisation known to be funded to disseminate nonsense, confuse the public with dodgy non-science and carry political favour, worse, you act like an unpaid lackey for the same mob without even questioning why it exists in the first place. Then to top it off, you get all precious when somebody provides documents that outline what has been known for ages.

As for a document being scanned and then turned into a PDF, so what? I do that all the time for my personal documents. It doesn’t make the content any less relevant.

The Heartland Institute, the IPA, the Australian Environment Foundation et al are all in the pocket of mining and oil interests, designed to pander to people like yourself. They still think the dirty commies are about to get them. It would be funny if their denialism aided by gullible, shortsighted people like yourself wasn’t causing so much damage to science and reason.

        Merchants of Doubt

Do yourself a favour and read the book, make the effort to learn a little about the Heartland Institute and how you are being used.

    • klem says:

Um, I’d say they are easily duped and lack critical thinking skills. Just being climate alarmists demonstrates that really.

      cheers

  5. I love the irony of the fakers claiming a fake.

Anybody interested in the facts knows that Heartland & Co aren’t interested in science or an informed community, only money, power and self-interest.

    • suyts says:

and, obviously, the same holds true with many alarmists.

      • Really? Care to name any climate scientists who are driven by money, power and self-interest?

      • suyts says:

I was referring to your comment about facts. Deep climate, DeSmog…. that all ran with this without verifying. If you were to download the pdfs, you’d see the fake pdf has been scanned in instead of just being sent. Click on the properties.

As far as naming climate scientists driven by ….. whatever, a reasonable person could state that given the graft and gratuities given to them for their particular ideology, many. But, I don’t pretend to know their motivations, but you should check out how much Mann is hauling in. Hansen has received 7 figures on top of his 6 figure govt. salary….. but again, I don’t personally know the guys and so their wealth acquired through all of this is probably just a happenstance…… lol

      • So Hansen and Mann are the best you can come up with? Out of what, twenty, thirty thousand scientists whose work directly and indirectly supports concerns about anthropogenic climate change. Yes, I see it now, it has to be a conspiracy.

    Comparing Clmategate and Fakegate:

Climategate emails were real – fakegate email was forged.
CRU confirmed Climategate emails were real, Heartland confirmed Fakegate email was…. er well…. faked.

Give up this fake story. See http://wattsupwiththat.com/2012/02/15/notes-on-the-fake-heartland-document/#more-56736

Short shrift is right. The whole Deniergate/Fakegate thing has gotten zero traction with the MSM and the public. Its been about 5 days since the documents were revealed and the story has already died.

On the other hand, ClimteGAte is still talked about after two years. Now THAT was a scandal. Wahoo!

  8. rumleyfips says:

    Klem:

I have a copy of the documents. So sue me.

  9. klem says:

    Wow!

Peter Gleick (AKA Mr. Climate Crock of the Week, AKA Mr. Integrity in Science) confesses to stealing the doc’s. Law suits on the way.

    See you in jail Pete.

    Wow, wow, wow!

It is so great being a climate denier. This is fun!
