Gina’s address to the nation: with special captions! (click image)

South Africa, August 12 2012, 34 miners shot dead in “self defence” by security forces:

South African president Jacob Zuma has announced an official probe into the deaths, which he said were shocking and unacceptable.

“The militant group stormed toward the police, firing shots and wielding dangerous weapons,” Riah Phiyega told a news conference on Friday.

“Police retreated systematically and were forced to utilise maximum force to defend themselves. The total death (toll) of the protesters currently stands at 34, with more than 78 injured.”

So far 259 people have been arrested on various charges stemming from the clash on Thursday at the platinum mine run by London-listed Lonmin, she said.

  1. ““Police retreated systematically and were forced to utilise maximum force to defend themselves. The total death (toll) of the protesters currently stands at 34, with more than 78 injured.”

Somehow I’m missing seeing the toll of deaths and injuries among the police?

  2. I went to the following site (which has a number of excellent pictures and a much more complete story), and left the following comment an hour or two ago, but so far it’s still invisible.

If the protesters were indeed an out of control mob and known to be armed with significant quantities of real guns, then what on earth were police forces doing in firing rubber bullets into their midst? Obviously the armed crowd would think they were being fired upon with real bullets and would respond in kind. If this is indeed what happened, and there was enough gunfire to kill and injure over a hundred protesters, how many police did the protesters kill and injure? Why are those numbers not part of this story?

Leaving them out gives the strong impression that there were NO police deaths or serious injuries and that the authorities’ response was grossly disproportionate at best and outright mass murder at the worst.

  3. Still no comments showing on that Aussie site. I’m not greatly surprised. I’ve experienced FAR more censorship on my Free Choice postings on Australian sites than those in any other country. No idea why.

  4. Nick says:

Just have a little look at the African ‘advantage’. Despite the incredibly low cost of most labor, unemployment rates in many African mineral exporters are astronomically high, and governance is ‘scratchy’ at best.

Rinehart wants to leverage regulation and taxation concessions in Australia by appealing to examples of lower cost enterprises in semi-failed states. Charming.
