Herald Sun War on Science No.10 : The one where Andrew Bolt gets his “science” from discredited hacks at the UKs Daily Mail

As noted in my last post, Andrew Bolt made the audacious claim that the world hadn’t warmed in over “15 years”.

There is little need to revisit the claims, as I addressed in the previous post. However, it is worth noting that Bolt is given a full-page in today’s HUN to recycle the false claims made by David Rose in the Daily Mail:

IT’S a bright new year, so let’s see how the great global warming scare is panning out, shall we?

First, the planet hasn’t actually warmed for a decade—or even 15 years, according to new temperature data from Britain’s Met Office.

Hmm. That’s not what global warming scientists predicted.

It is now very clear that Rose deliberately misrepresented the Met Office’s research:

Today the Mail on Sunday published a story written by David Rose entitled “Forget global warming – it’s Cycle 25 we need to worry about”.

This article includes numerous errors in the reporting of published peer reviewed science undertaken by the Met Office Hadley Centre and for Mr. Rose to suggest that the latest global temperatures available show no warming in the last 15 years is entirely misleading.

Despite the Met Office having spoken to David Rose ahead of the publication of the story, he has chosen to not fully include the answers we gave him to questions around decadal projections produced by the Met Office or his belief that we have seen no warming since 1997.

However, Bolt remains impervious to information that runs counter to his distorted view of the science .

Indeed, in an act of breathtaking irony claims it is “scientists” and “warmists” impervious to facts:

Sea levels have recently dipped, the oceans have lately cooled, Arctic ice has not retreated since 2007, polar bear numbers are increasing, global crop yields keep rising and now some solar scientists warn not of warming, but cooling…

… So how do the warming activists respond to increasing evidence contradicting their theory that our carbon dioxide emissions are heating the world dangerously?

Simple. They close their eyes.

Andrew, meet Mr. Kettle.

In addition to the claim the globe stopped warming 15 years ago, Bolt trots out a whole series of debunked sceptic clichés:

Sea levels have recently dipped, the oceans have lately cooled, Arctic ice has not retreated since 2007, polar bear numbers are increasing, global crop yields keep rising and now some solar scientists warn not of warming, but cooling.

Let us take but one claim, that Arctic ice is not in retreat – a claim that is patently false.

Data from the National Snow & Ice Data Center in the US  illustrates the extend of Arctic sea ice is has been plunging:

It would appear that Bolt prefers to get his “science” from hack tabloid journalists rather than actually going to the original sources.

  1. [...] monitoring the loss or gain of Arctic Sea ice like a political poll. The Herald Sun’s Andrew Bolt typifies this approach: Sea levels have recently dipped, the oceans have lately cooled, Arctic ice has not retreated since [...]

There is plenty of rubbish doing the round on the internet – the above link is by the Royal Mounted Police Canada – an ULTRA right wing web site for it members supporting the anti-environmental polcies of the Harper Government.. The above PDF is the true report.

In that report it clearly states that Polar Bears have a large depedence on returning annual sea ice around the heavily convaluted bays of far Northern Canada and that if Global continues it path to lesser annual return sea ice many areas where the polar bear exist and are sustainable will be EXTINCT.

    To others of lesser intelligence………………

That is putting the report in even better light. Want to read this report – well Monckton and Bolt – its all their buddy. Please stop taking this darn science out of context – you are the worst offenders for out of context so called implied science. Read and get yourself an education. Bolt get your wife to cook for once and get and read the thing Stay away from the kitchen for once. And whatever happened to your conscience – buddy.

Below in an internet Link to Nunavut Wildlife Management in the Inuit (Eskimo) Arctic region of Canada.

In the Inuit Capital, Iqaluit, the Inuit Environment Minister Dan Shewchuk (about 18 months ago) said that they were now opposed to the listing of polar bears under Canada’s Species At Risk Act.
Although computer programmes and simulations show that polar bears should be declining in number, the actual facts show that they are increasing in number (and quite rapidly too).
The number of these bears has increased four fold (400% if you like) in the last 40 years and has doubled in the last 10 years.
At the same time, the Inuit report seeing more polar bears than ever before.

A good book to read on the climate change debate is Greg Craven’s “What’s The Worst That Can happen?”. It bypasses the whole who is right or wrong, because either one could be wrong.

Great article – I came to work this morning to be “assaulted” by the deniers, now armed with Bolt’s ‘scientific’ article on global cooling. It took 5 seconds on Google to find this article to shut them up (thank-you John!). However, I’m waiting for the next Bolt-style ‘scientific’ article to re-energise them again. Trouble is, we need a case stated FOR the notion of climate change, one that is a paragraph in length with words of 3 syllables or less, otherwise they deniers won’t read it. Their world is built on thought bites, heavily filtered by the denial of any change in general.

As an aside, there was an interesting interview of Tim Minchin by Phillip Adams (LNL, on RN) where they discussed (among other things) the need for scepticism about the sceptics. You can catch it on the ABC RN website.

  7. Thank you for writing this post. I just read (and was enraged by) Bolt’s article in today’s Herald Sun and so I’m very keen to check out his sources. Especially his claim that polar bear numbers are increasing. Where the hell did he pull that one?

or you could go to crosphere and discover that the global sea ice anomoly is actually currently on equal par with the average.
